    Face to face visits are almost impossible, legislative actions happening at the congressional level and planning for the Texas legislative session in 2021 has advocates on their toes.

      Pam Bratton has always worked in fast-paced environments. Her first job operating a surfboard stand on Surfside Beach, Texas prepared her for working with a diverse group of people and for her current role as Vice President of Contracts & Compliance for Meador Staffing Services. Pam entered Human Resources in 1974 with Fluor Engineering in Houston, Texas and entered the staffing industry in 1976, as a recruiter in California.  Her career has led her into many phases of the business, from sales and operations to executive management.

      Pam Bratton serves as Co-Director of Government Affairs and Advocacy for Texas SHRM (The State Council of Texas).  She serves as Vice-Chair of the Texas –American Staffing Association PAC Board, Executive Committee for the Alliance for Securing and Strengthening the Economy in Texas, and on the Executive Board of the Texas Association of Business. She maintains an active role in monitoring regulatory and legislative actions.  When there is an issue that affects HR or staffing, you’ll likely find Pam at the Texas Capital spreading the word about how it impacts jobs for Texans pain.

      Seven Steps to Making Bulletproof Hiring Decisions

      Almost half of new hires will fail within 18 months.  

      With estimates of the cost of a bad hire ranging anywhere from $10,000 to $250,000, getting new employee selection right is critical to business success.

      While not all bad hires are predictable based on the employees’ past performance and behavior, many are. In this presentation, Mike Coffey, SPHR will outline a thorough background screening process that begins with a risk-based analysis of the position, identifies red-flag behaviors of concern for the position, includes a thorough employment application and interview process, and ends with verification of the information provided by the applicant.

      Mr. Coffey will also discuss important legal compliance issues, including the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the EEOC’s guidance on employers’ use of criminal history, and the growing Ban-the-Box movement.

      • Explore how to analyze and document that risk factors associated with a position
      • Illustrate how to fairly and effectively evaluate applicant risk based on past behavior
      • Identify the legal constraints on employers' use of criminal history information

        Using Organizational Values as a Planning & Accountability Tool

        Many organizations create flowery and aspirational lists of values, emblazoning them on posters,  name badges, and websites.  However, there is often a disconnect between the stated values and how the organization plans and manages its operations. This disconnect leads to confusion and discontent on the part of employees, customers, and other stakeholders.

        In this presentation, Mike Coffey will discuss the importance of clarifying an organization’s values and how to use them in strategic planning, product and service design, and performance management.
