"OSHA Update and Why am I Getting Inspected by OSHA"

The first question that comes to an employer’s mind when OSHA shows up is,
“Why are they here?”

Understanding the OSHA inspection process and emphasis programs provides an opportunity to ensure your programs are in compliance with OSHA regulatory requirements.  

Participant Learning Objectives:

●  Examine new OSHA proposals regarding workplace policies & inspections

●  Evaluate your safety program to determine compliance with OSHA

emphasis areas

●  Recognize the type of OSHA inspection being conducted and its scope

●  Clarify the types of non-inspection enforcement activities and how to

respond

James Shelton (Jim) - has been with the OSHA Houston North Area Office since 1996. In 2004 Jim became the Compliance Assistance Specialist (CAS) which is a non-enforcement position within OSHA responsible for outreach, training, and assistance to employees, employers, and industry groups. The CAS also provides support to, maintain, and develop OSHA alliances and partnerships and assists on Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) audit teams.

Prior to becoming the CAS, Jim was an OSHA inspector and conducted enforcement inspections on hundreds of worksites and investigated numerous workplace fatalities. Jim received the 2020 Safety Associate of the Year award from the Associated General Contractors Houston Chapter, the 2017 Safety Professional of the Year award from the Gulf Coast Chapter of the American Society Safety Engineers (ASSE) and the FY 2016 OSHA award for Training Excellence. Mr. Shelton has a M.S.

Degree in Safety Management and a B.S Degree in Industrial Safety and Industrial Security both from Central Missouri State University.
