Professional Certification Preparation provides three different options to help prepare to sit for the professional certification exam administered by the Human Resource Certification Institute: (1) a 9-week study group with presentations by subject matter experts; (2) a 2 1/2-day intensive workshop that also teaches testing skills; or (3) Rice UniversityĆs School of Continuing Studies using the SHRM Learning System offered at a discounted rate to HR Houston members. The Gulf Coast Symposium on Human Resource Issues is an annual conference that attracts HR professionals from the Texas Gulf Coast to hear nationally recognized speakers, attend outstanding workshops and meet over 170 suppliers at the Exhibitor Showcase. The Symposium has seen an increase in attendance almost every year since 1992, becoming one of the largest regional HR conferences in the United States and expanded its schedule to 2 days. History The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), formerly called the American Society for Personnel Administration (ASPA), was founded in 1948 by a group of just 28 individuals who anticipated the need for a national personnel organization. The goal in founding ASPA was to provide continued professional development opportunities for what the founding members recognized as a profession in transition, promote national networking, and to generally advance the interests of the profession.
