COMMUNITY IMPACT UPDATE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Local Human Resources Professionals Make an Impact in Montgomery County
The Woodlands, TX, August 29, 2006 - Realizing that human resources is a specialized area that many non-profit organizations may not have the resources to support, members of The Montgomery County chapter of the Society for Human Resources Management (MC-SHRM; www.mc-shrm.org) have found a very meaningful avenue to give back to the community. They created an organized outreach program, called the Community Impact Initiative, to continue and expand the volunteer work being done informally by the chapter's members.
In only one year, the Community Impact Initiative has significantly helped two major non-profits navigate hurdles associated with hiring and organizational strategies, plus it has created a supervisor training institute that will help individuals learn the ins and outs of successfully managing their staff.
One lucky recipient of the group's talents is Texas New Community Alliance, a consortium of non-profit entities that is developing New Danville, a community for high-functioning adults with mental disabilities (www.newdanville.org). To assist this new start-up, MC-SHRM members formed a working committee that has drafted job descriptions, recommended policies and procedures, recruited new employees, designed new employee orientation, and provided guidance to the operational management on human resources issues.
"Without MC-SHRM's support and assistance, I would have struggled and made some serious mistakes since I have no human resource experience," said Kathy Sanders, President of Texas New Community Alliance. "I am so grateful to all the members of the Community Impact Committee for their help, guidance, and dedication to our organization."
Another key project for the Community Impact Committee has been revising the Montgomery County United Way's employee handbook: MC-SHRM members formed a team that reviewed and revised the current employee policies and procedures and recommended changes to MCUW's management and board of directors.
The newest Community Impact project is designing and presenting MC-SHRM's supervisor training institute, which will be presented on October 24, 2006, by MC-SHRM members. This institute will be open to all employers in Montgomery and the surrounding counties for a nominal fee.
Projects chosen for the Community Impact Initiative must meet two criteria. First, the projects need to have a measurable impact on some aspect of the greater Montgomery County community. Second, the projects must provide the volunteers with opportunities to further their own professional development. The goal is to expose MC-SHRM's members to areas of human resources that they may not deal with on a day-to-day basis in their regular jobs, thus increasing and sharpening their skill sets. In particular, with the Texas New Community team, the volunteers are building an HR program from ground zero, incorporating as many best practices as possible. Such opportunities are rare in the workaday world.
MC-SHRM will recognize its Community Impact Volunteers, solicit volunteers for upcoming projects and discuss ideas for new projects at its December general meeting. MC-SHRM asks anyone with an idea for a Community Impact project, as well as anyone who is looking for more information about the Community Impact Initiative, to contact Chapter President Tanya Cook at tanya.cook@memorialhermann.org.
